Number 1

Welcome to the Sea of Leaves, where I post my musings, insights (might not be too-many of those), and ideas on running games in my tabletop RPG setting, Sea of Leaves.

I'm a relative newcomer to RPGs, having only been able to indulge in them as a married adult, so my experience in terms of length of time is quite limited. I have also been almost completely relegated to the role of referee, having participated in games as a player a total of...two times. I think.

Pathfinder was my first actual game, and it still holds a special place in my heart despite having fallen-out with it due to the unbearable amount of options and crunch. Since then, however, I've cast the net wide, sifted through what I've found, and have finally narrowed-down my preferences to OSR-style games, from which Sea of Leaves takes more than a little inspiration.

Now, to be clear, I view Sea of Leaves as belonging to the OSR in the sense that it encourages a style of play that harkens back to the earliest days of the hobby: XP for treasure, rulings not rules, characters as player pawns. It departs from the most popular roleplaying game in the world in its exclusive use of six-sided dice (I play in a part of the world where polyhedrals are almost alien luxuries) and in design aesthetic: there are no classes, player characters are always human, and the tone, while not exactly grimdark, is...foggy?

Yeah. Foggy.

Anyway, I think that's more than enough for a first post. If you're curious and would like to try-out the game for yourself, you can download the latest version of the rules here:

It's been playtested somewhat, but I'm always tinkering with it here and there. I suppose that means it will never really be "finished". But I'm okay with that.

Be informed that the rules document uses artwork I've stolen from the internet (the artists are credited, don't worry) for my own viewing pleasure, simply because it makes me feel like I have a legitimate game document in my hands. I have no intention of selling the work, but if that should happen, the art will be the first thing redone.
